Cairo
Cairo is the capital of Egypt which is also the largest city in the nation. The city being located in Northern Africa, Cairo is believed to originate long before that dates back to nearly 6000 years ago. However, this modern city of Cairo came into being around 969 AD which was through the attack by the Muslim invaders who entered Cario from Tunisia. In the 19th century when the Suez Canal was opened the city has observed various major growths which also gained the status as the home of trade with Africa, Asia and Europe. Today the city of Cairo is one of the major cities of Egypt. Although the city is a business hub, the city is also visited by various tourists throughout the year as the city welcomes them to its ancient pyramids, outstanding monuments and historic towns.
Tourist attractions in Cairo
Pyramids
One of the most popular attractions of the city is the great pyramid of Giza which attracts thousands of tourists every year. Being located on the outskirts of Cairo the pyramids are the only remaining among the ancient Seven Wonders of the World. The pyramid of Giza was discovered to be built as a tomb for the forth dynasty Egyptian pharaoh king Khafu. This great pyramid dates back to 2560 BC.
Museums
Being abundant with history, it is obvious that the city would house a number of museums that serve as a place for its rich legacy. The great Egyptian museum includes the finest and the largest number of collections of Graeco-Roman and Egyptian antiquities. Apart from this there are also museums that include Islamic Arts that displays a wide collection of different Islamic art forms and paintings. In addition to this there are also other sites like Townhouse Gallery, Military Museum and Coptic Museum Al-Gawhara.
The Citadel and the Cairo Tower
The citadel in one of the most preferred places where people spend the entire day rather than other sites in Cairo. The citadel is built on a prompt of limestone which is also a house to various ancient mosques, museums and other sites. It is also a great place to have a clear view of the city. Apart from this, a not to be missed attraction is the Cairo Tower. The tower is located on an island in the Nile River which offers a compelling view of the surroundings.
Mosques
Almost all the tourist at Cairo make sure to visit the beautiful mosques of the city. The great An-Nasir Mohammed Mosque is studied to date back to the 14th century. The popularity of the mosque is described by its superb Mameluk architecture. Apart from this the El-Azhar Mosque and Barquqiya Mosque that are located nearly the Gohan el-Qaid intersection is also most visited as it offers an architectural beauty of the ancient world.
Entertainment
The city of Cairo also houses the National Cultural Center which can be visited to observe ballet and opera performances. The State Theatre is also a well known place where you can enjoy folk performances. Although the city is a historic city it also includes pulsating nightlife.
